Suminagashi, or floating ink, is a traditional Japanese art form that originated in the 12th century. It is an ancient process of marbling plain paper with ink to transform it into a vibrant, colorful work of art. In this hands-on class, we will explore the scientific principle of surface tension and density that play into this beautiful traditional art form. We will try the Zen-like techniques of floating and arranging ink on water to create bright, marvelous, marbled designs. Ink is permanent; wear clothing that can get dirty. No previous art experience is necessary.
