Unable to duck away from an increasingly interconnected world, China ran afoul of the hungry imperial powers in the 19th century. At the dawn of the 20th century, China was little more than a cooked carcass being chewed on by other nations. Through the exploration of the 19th-century wars, skewed trade agreements, drug trade, rebellions, and foreign interventions that cost millions of lives and carved away Chinese sovereignty, we will understand why China is striving so hard to avoid being on the menu of outside predatory powers again.
