A thousand years ago, hordes of unruly immigrants speaking foreign languages overran the borders of England. Authorities were powerless to prevent the complete transformation of their lands, culture, and language. Out of this strife emerged Britain and the first tentative roots of a new form of government. With an understanding of the tribulations of the Norman kings of England, we will gain an appreciation of what is at stake each election year. The class will cover the Viking invasions to the accession of Edward I.
