« back to classes page
Rarely is Colorado mentioned when conversations arise about the Dust Bowl. However, those who grew up in southeast Colorado are aware of where the hardest hit area of the 1930s dust bowl was and what their ancestors endured. Although widely documented by outsiders, the dust bowl story has not been effectively told from the viewpoint of those who were there. We will begin with a 1929 advertisement the instructor's grandparents ran in the local newspaper before times got tough and continue to tell the story through photos from family and friends, stories passed down from the area, and newspaper articles from the Springfield, Colorado, newspapers of 1929 to 1939.
