The U.S. abruptly changed course and joined the Great War in 1917. We will examine the U.S. home front and the fighting “over there” from 1917 to 1919. It was a paradoxical time of grand ideals, suppression of dissent, systemic racism, and unprecedented government involvement in business and private life, followed by bitter disillusionment. The Wilson War years were a time of high-minded self-sacrifice coinciding with suspicion, hatred, and self-serving partisan politics that provides powerful insight into today’s challenges.
