On October 19, 1865, the steamship S.S. Republic left New York bound for New Orleans. On board were passengers and $400,000 in gold and silver coins. The steamship ran into a hurricane and sank off the Georgia coast. We will watch and discuss a documentary on the discovery of the wreckage and discuss the wreckage and history of the coins and other artifacts on the S.S. Republic.
