CourseGraphic The Wends are a little-known Slavic speaking people from Northeast Germany who immigrated to Australia, Canada, and America in the mid-1840s due to oppression by the Prussian government. They brought with them a rich cultural tradition of food, costumes, and seasonal celebrations that they adapted to their new surroundings. The majority of Wends who came to America settled in central Texas and Iowa. Discover why Wendish brides wore black wedding dresses until the 1900s, sample traditional Wendish noodles, learn the Wendish alphabet, and listen to a Wendish choir recording. The instructor is a descendant of the Wends of central Texas and will share Wendish family history.
